9 December | SID Lecture ‘Regional Perspectives on International Relations’, with Marc Atouga

In a rapidly changing global landscape, the role of the nation-state is challenged on different levels. Regional alliances such as the European Union, the African Union, and Mercosur are becoming stronger and more impactful. Are traditional geopolitics of nation-states evolving into geopolitics of regions? Are regions better equipped to act in the globalising world? Marc Atouga, Commissioner for Agriculture, Environment and Water Resources at ECOWAS, will discuss these issues in his lecture within the series ‘Dispersed Power in a World in Transition’.

New YorkIn his new book, ‘The Magic of New York’, Willem Post explains the different factors of success that make New York for many people the number one city of the world. What should the new mayor Bill de Blasio do to keep the magic alive? And what can international cities such as The Hague learn from New York? Willem Post will share his view on the success factors of New York,  and will present his findings on how other cities can learn from the city of cities on their path to becoming a city that never sleeps. Willem Post is specialised in American politics and foreign policy, and is one of the most requested U.S. experts from the Netherlands.

21 January 2014 | SID Lecture with Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation, Lilianne Ploumen

In the 2013-2014 series so far, we discussed the many changes taking place in international relations. For the closing session of Part I, we are honoured to have Dr Lilianne Ploumen as our guestspeaker. As Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation she will share her ideas on how the Netherlands can anticipate and respond to this changing pattern. The Netherlands is a small country in size, but it has a broad international netwerk and is a relevant economic power. What is the role of the corporate sector and civil society?

After her speech, Dr Ploumen will participate in a discussion with a panel of students and the audience.
